Kolkata Apr 14 (IBNS) : Emirates, a global connector and facilitator of vital trade links, marked ten years of operations in Kolkata, by deploying a second Boeing 777 on the route.

The Boeing 777 aircraft, deployed last month, replaces the current A330-200, providing more customer options as well as additional seat capacity on the route. With this up-gauge, Kolkata is now served twice daily with an Emirates B777, maintaining its position as the only airline operating a First Class service to the city.

Since the start of its operations, Emirates carried over two million passengers on the route and moved more than 66,000 tonnes of cargo from Kolkata. With 13 weekly flights between the West Bengal capital and its home and hub in Dubai, Emirates is now the largest westbound carrier from East India.

“We are always seeking ways to enhance our services and deploying a second Boeing 777on the Kolkata route is part of our commitment to offer travellers in India even more comfort and entertainment on our flights,” said Ahmed Khoory, Emirates’ Senior Vice President, Commercial Operations- West Asia and Indian Oceans

“In addition to the new on-board product, we are also able to offer more seats, ensuring capacity to meet growing demand on the route, not just from Kolkata but the entire east and north-east India region. We would like to thank all our customers and industry partners in Kolkata for their long-standing support over the years. We are proud to contribute to the country’s thriving tourism and trade industry, connecting India with more than 150 destinations across six continents,” he added.

Kolkata is the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal, located on the east bank of the Hooghly River. A bustling city with 4.5 million residents, Kolkata has long been known for its cultural heritage. A former capital of India, it has a proud heritage of modern Indian literary, artistic and academic thought and is often dubbed the Cultural or Literary Capital of India.

With demand for air travel expected to double in the next five to ten years in India, Emirates is well positioned to bring a growing number of tourists and business travellers to the eastern region of the country, further enabling trade and investment.
