Dr. Arvind Panagariya first NITI Ayog Vice-Chairman

New Delhi, Jan 13 (IBNS) Noted economist Arvind Panagariya was on Tuesday appointed the first Vice-Chairman of the newly-created National Institute for Transforming India (NITI) Aayog.

The government has already appointed 2 full time members- economist Bibek Debroy and former DRDO chief VK Saraswat, 4 ex-officio members and 3 special invitees for the Aayog that succeeds the Union Planning Commission.

Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, Arun Jaitley, Suresh Prabhu and Radha Mohan Singh will be the Ex-Officio members. Their ministerial colleagues Nitin Gadkari, Smriti Zubin Irani and Thawar Chand Gehlot are Special Invitees.
   
Earlier, the government had notified the Cabinet resolution  on  constitution of the Ayog which was approved by the Prime Minister on January 1.

Dr Panagariya has earlier been the Chief Economist of the Asian Development Bank and a Professor of Economics and Co-director, Centre for International Economics, University of Maryland at College Park.

He holds a Ph.D degree in Economics from Princeton University. He has worked for the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, World Trade Organization, and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in various capacities.
