Coal India chairman forecast a national output target of 1,080 MT for FY25.

Coal India trims FY25 production target to 806-810 MT, focuses on 4-5% growth

Kolkata: Coal India Ltd (CIL) has revised its production target for the current fiscal to a realistic range of 806-810 million tonnes (MT), down from the earlier goal of 838 MT, according to company Chairman PM Prasad.

He noted that production had grown by 2.2% to 543 MT up to December in the ongoing fiscal, and the company is striving to accelerate output in the remaining period to achieve a growth rate of 4-5%, PTI reported

Prasad stated that the full-year production target reflects the company’s realistic expectations of 4-5% growth.

Speaking at the announcement of the 11th edition of the International Mining and Machinery Exhibition (IME 2025), he expressed optimism about nearing the revised target.

He highlighted the strong performance of subsidiaries such as Mahanadi Coalfields, Northern Coalfields Ltd, and Western Coalfields Ltd, while noting that Eastern Coalfields Ltd was also hopeful of meeting its goal, the report said.

However, he pointed out that the performance of South Eastern Coalfields’ mega mines in the remaining 75 days of the fiscal would be critical.

Production challenges at certain subsidiaries have been impacting the overall target, according to officials.

Prasad also discussed India’s broader coal production outlook, forecasting a national output target of 1,080 MT for FY25, an increase from 997 MT achieved in FY24.

He remained optimistic about coal production growth in FY25, dismissing concerns of sluggish demand.

Meanwhile, captive and commercial coal mines have recorded over 30% growth in production up to December in the current fiscal.

Prasad reiterated CIL’s commitment to reducing India’s thermal coal imports, noting that imports had decreased by 3.1% year-on-year to 149.39 MT as of April.
