Sensex climbs 1240 points, Nifty tops 2170

The BSE Sensex on Monday spurted 1240.90 pts to close high at 71,941.57 following gains in Energy, Utilities and Power stocks amid strong global cues.

However, selling in Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) and spike in crude oil prices restricted from further gains.

The National Stock Exchange (NSE) rose 385 pts at 21,737.60.

The NSE registered days high and low at 21,763.25 and 21,429.60 pts respectively.

The Sensex opened higher at 70,968.10, up 268 pts. During the day, it was spurted 1310 pts at 72,010.22, days high, before closing at 71,941.57, up 1240.90 pts from its previous close.

The stocks that boosted the market were Energy, Utilities, Oil and Gas and Power stocks.

Energy was a star gainer up by 5.29 pc followed by Utilities by 3.59 pc, Oil and Gas by 4.94 pc and Power by 3.03 pc.

The Mid Cap rose 1.68 pc and Small Cap by 1.03 pc.

In 30 scrips, 25 advanced while 5 declined.

The gainers were Reliance Industries by 6.86 pc to Rs 2896.15, Tata Motors by 3.64 pc to Rs 840.95, Powergrid by 3.40 pc to Rs 253.80, L& T by 3.22 pc to Rs 3707.40 and Kotak Bank by 3.18 pc to Rs 1823.50.

The losers were ITC by 1.20 pc to Rs 450, Infosys by 0.89 pc to Rs 1655.90, JSW Steel by 0.48 pc to Rs 812.55 and Tech Mahindra by 0.38 pc to Rs 1316.55.
