Indian market: Sensex surges 547.83 points

Mumbai: The BSE Sensex on Wednesday rallied 547.83 points at 55,816.32 on the strength of IT, healthcare and capital goods stocks.

The Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) too rose 158 points at 16,641.80.

The Sensex opened weak at 55,258 and fell by 10 points. It dropped by 111 points at 55,157.99. It jumped 585 points at 55,853.09, the day's high, before closing at 55,816.32, rallying 547.83 from its previous close.

The Sensex registered the day's high and low at 55,853.08 and 55,157.99 respectively.

The Nifty recorded the day's high and low at 16,653.45 and 16,438.75 respectively.
Sectoral indices like healthcare, capital goods, IT and technology stocks pushed the Sensex up.

In scrips, Sun Pharma was a star gainer, up by 3.30 per cent at 894.65 followed by SBI by 2.70 per cent to Rs 528.05, L&T by 2.55 per cent to Rs 1795.10, Bajaj finance by 2.38 per cent to Rs 6,408.90 and Asian Paints by 2.31 per cent to Rs 3,179.50.

The losers were Bharti Airtel by 1.25 per cent to Rs 675.25, Kotak Bank by 0.17 per cent to Rs 1,754.60 and NTPC by 0.10 per cent to Rs 149.75.

The Mid Cap rose by 0.90 per cent and Small Cap by 0.38 per cent.

In 30 scrips, 27 advanced while 3 declined.
