Goa: 6-8 mining blocks will be auctioned before Dec 15, says CM

Panaji/UNI: Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Wednesday announced that six to eight mining blocks in the state would be auctioned before December 15 this year.

Speaking to reporters, he said the auction process would be carried through Goa Mineral Development Corporation. The State Bank of India (SBI) too will be also involved in the process, he said.

Dr Sawant said help from Mineral Exploration Corporation Limited (MECL) was being taken in identifying the leases to be auctioned.

Iron ore mining in Goa has been suspended since March 2018 after 88 mining leases renewed by the then Laxmikant Parsekar government in 2014-15 were quashed by the Supreme Court.

There have been assurances on many occasions by the government to restart the mining but mining operations, the backbone of the state economy, is yet to see light of the day.
