Markets end lower after witnessing ups and downs on Thursday

Mumbai/IBNS: The Sensex closed 76.47 points - or 0.19 per cent - lower at 40,575.17 and the Nifty ended 30.70 points - or 0.26 per cent - at 11,968.40.

While ITC, Axis Bank and Bharti Airtel were the top contributors to the loss in Sensex, Bharat Petroleum (BPCL), Coal India, Tata Steel, Yes Bank and Bharti Airtel were the major losers on the Nifty 50.

Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea registered losses, closing 2.39% and 5.67% lower, respectively.

Zee Entertainment Ltd closed 11.73% higher and was the top gainer in the Nifty 50 basket after promoter Essel Group said it will share 16.5% promoter stake in the company.
