Diljit Dosanjh, facing backlash in India over casting Pak actress, now a part of Canadian university's syllabus

Indian singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh has become a part of the syllabus in a Canadian university, media reports said.

A course dedicated to the Punjabi artiste has been introduced to the curriculum of Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU).

The course, which will be formally launched in late 2026, will focus on Diljit, his growing relevance and global impact.

Dr Charlie Wall-Andrews, Assistant Professor at The Creative School at Toronto Metropolitan University, said in a statement as quoted by NDTV, "His rise illustrates the cultural influence and economic potential of Punjabi music on the world stage. By examining his impact, students will explore how regional sounds shape global pop culture, mobilise diasporic communities and contribute to sustainable creative economies rooted in authenticity."

This comes amid a backlash Diljit is facing in India over the featuring of Pakistani Hania Aamir in his upcoming film, Sardaar Ji 3 where he participated in the capacities of both actor and producer.

The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) has slammed Diljit's decision to cast a Pakistani actress in his film, a horror-comedy slated for June 27 release.

The federation has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging strict actions against Diljit including cancellation of passports.

The (FWICE) called Diljit's action "willful affront to the sovereignty, dignity, and security of India".

Meanwhile, Diljit has announced his upcoming Punjabi film Sardaar Ji 3 will only release overseas amid the India-Pak bilateral tension.

The collaboration with Pakistan actors and technicians has been halted since the April 22 terror attack that killed 26 tourists at Baisaran Valley in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam.
