We are currently on a pace to finish evacuation from Afghanistan by Aug 31: Joe Biden

Washington: US President Joe Biden on Tuesday said the United States is on pace to finish evacuations from Afghanistan, which has been witnessing conflict ever since Taliban overran the nation, by Aug 31.

"First, on evacuation, we agreed that we will continue to close — our close cooperation to get people out as efficiently and safely as possible.  We are currently on a pace to finish by August the 31st.  The sooner we can finish, the better.  Each day of operations brings added risk to our troops," Biden said.

"But the completion by August 31st depends upon the Taliban continuing to cooperate and allow access to the airport for those who were transport- — we’re transporting out and no disruptions to our operations," he said.

On August 15, the Taliban entered Kabul.

President Ashraf Ghani resigned and fled the country to prevent what he described as bloodshed that would occur if militants stormed the city.

Many countries have since started evacuating their citizens and diplomatic personnel from Afghanistan.

Anti-Taliban demonstrations are taking place in different parts of the globe.
