Toronto van attack: Accused driver praised misogynistic incel killer
Toronto, Apr 25 (IBNS): Just before killing 10 persons by his driven van, accused Torontonian driver Alek Minassian had praised an American misogynistic 'incel' killer on a Facebook post, media reports said.
Minassian has been quoted by BBC, "The Incel Rebellion has already begun! We will overthrow all the Chads and Stacys! All hail the Supreme Gentleman Elliot Rodger!"
The profile was later reportedly confirmed by Facebook.
Alek Minassian, 25, was arrested after a tense standoff with police during which Minassian appeared to be trying to provoke the officer into shooting him. Minassian is expected to appear in court at 10am local time on Wednesday.
He has been charged with ten counts of murder and 13 counts of attempted murder.
"On Monday, April 23, 2018, at about 1:30 p.m., police were called to a collision in the area of Yonge Street and Finch Avenue East. It was reported that a van had mounted the curb and a number of pedestrians had been struck," the Toronto Police said in a statement.
Toronto City police chief Mark Saunders has said that the incident seemed to be deliberate but the motive of the attack was still not known.
One of the 10 people killed in the van attack on a busy Toronto street has been identified as Anne Marie D'Amico.
Anne was an employee at Invesco, a U.S.-based investment management firm.
Invesco Canada president Peter Intraligi confirmed the news in an emailed statement.
"Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with all those impacted by this tragic event," Intraligi said. "I can now confirm that unfortunately one of our employees has succumbed to her injuries. Out of respect for her and her family, we will not be providing any further comments."
Anne’s next of kin have been notified.
Invesco's Canadian headquarters is on Yonge Street, close to the crime scene where pedestrians were struck by the white rental van.
