Colombo, May 14 (IBNS): Amid reports of violence in Sri Lankan, police have arrested two people in connection with the incidents, media reports said.

Leader of the Mahasohon Balakaya, Amith Weerasinghe and Anti-Corruption Force Operations Director Namal Kumara were arrested today, police said Daily Mirror newspaper.

They were arrested in Theldeniya and Warakapola areas respectively, the newspaper reported.

“They have been arrested for questioning in connection with Monday's violence,” police spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara told The Hindu.

The Sri Lankan government on Monday banned social media platforms and messaging apps, including Facebook and WhatsApp,  temporarily after  posts reportedly triggered anti-Muslim riots across several towns in the country, media reports said.

As per CNN report,  the social media crackdown followed alleged attacks on mosques and Muslim-owned businesses in a northwestern town over the weekend.

Sri Lanka witnessed a massive terror attack on Easter Sunday when eight blasts rocked the country and killed over 253 people.

The Islamic State had claimed responsibility for the incident.
