A Pakistani mob killed a man after he allegedly desecrated the Holy Quran in  Madyan area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Thursday.

Eight people were injured in the unrest, according to Swat District Police Officer (DPO) Dr Zahidullah Khan, reported Dawn News.

He said the police had moved the suspect of the alleged desecration incident to the police station but a charged mob “attacked the police station and took the suspect away”.

“People set fire to the police station and a mobile vehicle,” the DPO said, adding that the suspect was “torched”.

An investigation into the incident is currently going on.

Several videos of the incident have now gone viral on the social media where a mob could be seen standing close to a body on fire.

Madyan is considered as a popular domestic tourist spot in Pakistan's Swat Valley.

Former information minister Fawad Chaudhry expressed his displeasure over the incident and posted on X: "And the madness continues…. We are hell bent to commit Suicide as a Society #Extremism."

Minorities in Pakistan have been targeted on various occasions ever since  former President of Pakistan Gen Ziaul Haq made blasphemy punishable by death.

At least 2,120 persons are reported to have been accused of committing blasphemy between 1987 and 2022, reported Dawn News.

Police saved a Christian man in Sargodha from an enraged mob after he was alleged to have desecrated the Holy Quran.

He died later due to the injuries he suffered.
