Pakistan: Suspicious death at Police post sparks murder case against two officers

At least two police officials in Pakistan have been arrested on murder charges after a man was found hanging from a ceiling fan inside the Industrial Area police chowki in Lahore, media reports said.

Following the incident, the entire staff of the police post was suspended after the body was recovered on Thursday. Authorities initiated action based on a preliminary inquiry, which reportedly held the policemen responsible for criminal negligence, according to Dawn News.

The deceased was identified as Iftikhar (50). He had reportedly been taken into custody by the chowki in-charge, Sub-Inspector Ishaq, after he visited Sadhoki village allegedly to meet a girl.

The woman’s family alleged that Iftikhar was carrying a pistol and had attempted to shoot her brother, who escaped unhurt.

Lahore Operations DIG Faisal Kamran told Dawn News that the chowki in-charge left the suspect in the custody of lower staff while he visited the Punjab Forensic Science Agency (PFSA), instead of transferring him to the main police station.

During his absence, the suspect allegedly hanged himself from a ceiling fan inside the police post.

The deceased’s family has demanded the registration of a murder case against the police officials involved.
