Love under fire: Israel’s ‘bomb shelter dating’ app leaves internet divided

Israel, a country that has been engaged in multiple conflicts over the past few years, has unveiled a range of innovative apps aimed at helping people cope with daily life under the constant threat of missile attacks.

Among the unusual digital tools introduced is a “bomb shelter dating” app designed to connect single people who find themselves taking cover during rocket sirens.

The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted the initiative in a post on X, writing: “Only in Israel.”

“Missile sirens generate tech innovation,” the Ministry added, noting that several apps have been developed to help citizens manage life during emergencies.

According to the ministry, other apps include tools that help residents “plan safe shower time” between sirens and track “sleep lost to sirens” during periods of frequent missile alerts.

Introducing the apps, the ministry said the innovations demonstrate how creativity can emerge even during difficult circumstances.

Explaining the dating app, the ministry said it allows users to see “who is single” in a bomb shelter, adding that “even under fire… love goes on.”

However, the announcement drew mixed reactions online, with several social media users criticising the initiative and questioning its timing amid ongoing conflict.

“This is gross. People are dying. People are mourning. Don’t do this,” one user wrote.

Another user commented: “Only in Israel do we turn rockets into rocket science.”

“What kind of parody is this?” another user asked.

The app has been launched amid the US and Israel's ongoing conflict against Iran.
