Italy committed to helping Pakistani Christian woman Asia Bibi: Foreign Ministry

Milan, Nov 7 (IBNS): Amid fears for her safety following her acquittal of blasphemy after eight years on a death row, the Italian government on Wednesday said it is committed to helping Pakistani Christian woman Asia Bibi.

The Italian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday: "The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation together with Foreign Minister  Enzo Moavero Milanesi, to meet the many requests coming from Italian citizens, continue to closely follow the situation of Ms Asia Bibi in tight cooperation with the Italian Embassy in Pakistan and in constant coordination with all the States involved."

"The Foreign Ministry is ready to act on any decision that the Government may take," said the statement.

Pakistan has witnessed protests since Bibi was acquitted by the Supreme Court.

As per Geo New, Saif-ul-Mulook, the lawyer for Asia Bibi has revealed that the UN and EU made him leave Pakistan “against my wishes” because he was a “prime target.”

"And then they (the UN) and the European nation ambassadors in Islamabad, they kept me for three days and then put me on a plane against my wishes," the lawyer was quoted as saying by Geo News.

Asia was sentenced to death on blasphemy charges.

The apex court of the country later acquitted her.
