At least five people were killed and 10 others injured in a suicide attack at the residence of a peace committee member in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Friday, according to media reports.

The explosion occurred during a wedding celebration at the home of peace committee chief Noor Alam Mehsud in Dera Ismail Khan, District Police Officer Sajjad Ahmed Sahibzada told Dawn News.

According to police, the attacker struck while wedding guests were dancing, triggering a powerful blast that caused the roof of the building to collapse, hampering rescue operations.

“The explosion was a suicide blast,” the DPO said, adding that an emergency was declared at the District Headquarter Hospital.

In a statement, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Rescue 1122 spokesperson Bilal Ahmed Faizi said that five bodies and 10 injured persons had been shifted to the hospital.

Authorities cordoned off the area and launched an investigation into the incident.

Local media reported that peace committee leader Waheedullah Mehsud, also known as Jigri Mehsud, was among those killed.
