Donald Trump, Xi Jinping discuss developments on the Korean Peninsula

Washington, Jan 17 (IBNS): US President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping recently discussed the developments on the Korean Peninsula.

Both acknowledged the resumption of inter-Korean dialogue.

A statement issued by the White House said: "President Trump and President Xi acknowledged the resumption of inter-Korean dialogue and expressed hope that it might prompt a change in North Korea’s destructive behavior. "

"President Trump committed to sustain the United States-led global campaign of maximum pressure to compel North Korea to commit to denuclearization," it said.

In a major development, North Korea said recently that it will be sending delegates to South Korea for the upcoming Winter Olympics, reports said.

The games are scheduled to take place in South Korea in the month of February.

The decision was reached following a high level meeting, involving Ri Son-gwon, North Korea's chief delegate and Cho Myoung-gyon, South Korea's Unification Minister.

Meanwhile, Trump and Xi discussed 'trade issues' during their interaction.

"The two leaders also discussed trade issues, and President Trump expressed disappointment that the United States’ trade deficit with China has continued to grow.  President Trump made clear that the situation is not sustainable," the White House said.
