'Death threat' before Melbourne event? Australia probes online post targeting PM Modi ahead of visit

| @indiablooms | Jul 04, 2026, at 08:23 pm

Australian authorities have launched an investigation into an alleged online death threat targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of his scheduled visit to Melbourne on July 9, according to Australian media reports.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) is examining the social media post, with reports stating that investigators have identified an IP address linked to the account that published the message.

According to The Australia Today, the threatening comment appeared beneath a Facebook post promoting the "Melbourne Meets Modi" community event, which is set to take place at Melbourne's Marvel Stadium during the Prime Minister's visit.

The comment was allegedly posted from an account using the translated name "Abu Mustafa" and stated: "The rooftops of the stadium better close during the event, or he will be coming to Australia for his death".

The publication reported that the matter was referred to the Australian Federal Police on the same day the comment appeared online.

AFP examining post's source

Citing sources familiar with the investigation, The Australia Today reported that the AFP has traced an IP address associated with the social media account and is examining the circumstances surrounding the alleged threat.

Authorities are also assessing whether the online message constitutes a criminal offence under Australian law.

The Australian Federal Police has not issued any public statement regarding the investigation.

High-level security for visiting world leaders

Australian media reports noted that threats against visiting heads of government are treated with the highest level of seriousness by law enforcement agencies.

Security for high-profile international visits generally involves coordinated arrangements between the Australian Federal Police, state police forces and specialist protective security units to ensure the safety of visiting dignitaries and public events.

PM Modi set to visit Melbourne on July 9

The investigation comes just days before Prime Minister Modi's official visit to Australia.

During his visit, he is expected to participate in bilateral engagements with Australian leaders and attend community programmes, including the "Melbourne Meets Modi" event at Marvel Stadium, where members of the Indian diaspora are expected to gather in large numbers.

Australian authorities have not indicated whether the investigation will affect the Prime Minister's scheduled engagements, and security preparations for the visit are expected to continue as planned.
