Canada PM Justin Trudeau corrects woman who said 'mankind' at town hall

Ottawa, Feb 6 (IBNS): Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has received a round of applause at a town hall meeting last week when he corrected a woman who said "mankind".

One unknown woman took the microphone and threw a question at Trudeau saying, "We came here today to ask you to also look into the policies that religious charities, organisations have in our legislation so that it can also be changed because maternal love is the love that's going to change the future of mankind..."

Objecting the word mankind, Trudeau said: "We would like to say peoplekind not necessarily mankind..."

Trudeau's words were loudly cheered by the audience and appreciated by the woman who had questioned the PM.

Trudeau's comment has raised a speculation whether the Liberal government is trying to pose an image of "gender neutrality".

Days ago, Canada has passed a bill to make its national anthem "O Canada" gender neutral.

The bill was passed by the Senate recently.

The move was proposed by late politician Mauril Belanger in 2016, media report said.

After the passage of the bill, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted: "Mauril’s bill to make O Canada gender neutral passed third reading in the Senate tonight - another positive step towards gender equality."

The phrase in the bill changed from "in all thy sons" to "in all of us command".
