Canada: NDP leader Jagmeet Singh wins Burnaby race, becomes MP

Burnaby, Feb 27 (IBNS): New Democratic Party (NDP) leader Jagmeet Singh became a Canadian MP after clinching victory in the Burnaby South by-election on Tuesday, media reports said.

Singh, who is the first ethnic minority to become the chief of any major Canadian political party, won by securing 38 per cent of votes in a closely-fought election.

"Friends, we made history today. Guess what? We just told a lot of kids out there that yes, you can," the NDP chief has been quoted by BBC.

Poll became necessary after NDP leader Kennedy Stewart resigned to assume the post of Vancouver Mayor.

Singh's win is considered to be a major boost for the NDP ahead of the General Elections, which is due to be held in October.
