Canada in talks with Pakistan over Asia Bibi, says Canada PM Trudeau in Paris

Paris, Nov 13 (IBNS): Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said his country is talking with Pakistan over Asia Bibi, whose acquittal of charges of blasphemy sparked massive row in South Asia, media reports said.

Trudeau made the comment in an interview in Paris, where the Prime Minister went to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of World World I.

The Canadian Prime Minister has been quoted by The Guardian, "We are in discussions with the Pakistani government."

"There is a delicate domestic context that we respect which is why I don’t want to say any more about that, but I will remind people Canada is a welcoming country."

Bibi, who is a Christian woman, is presently in protective custody owing to fears of danger from people who disagree with the acquittal.

Islamabad has said it will bar Bibi from traveling abroad.

Several Islamists even threatened to raise protest if Bibi is allowed to leave Pakistan.

Last week, Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland said his government is engaged with the issue.
