Rohit Sharma, three others recommended for Khel Ratna Award

New Delhi/UNI: Vice-captain of limited-overs of Indian cricket team Rohit Sharma, wrestler Vinesh Phogat are among four athletes recommended for the country's highest sporting honour – Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna on Tuesday.

While other two chosen for the Khel Ratna are table tennis star Manika Batra and Rio Paralympic gold-winning high jumper Mariappan Thangavelu.

The 12-member selection committee of the Sports Ministry comprising the likes of Virender Sehwag and former hockey captain Sardar Singh, met here at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) headquarters and recommended the prestigious award.

This is only the second occasion that four athletes have been chosen for the top sporting honour.

Earlier, in 2016, wrestler Sakshi Malik, shooter Jitu Rai, gymnast Dipa Karmakar and star shuttler P V Sindhu were who jointly received this award.
