Mexico City/Xinhua/: Former Mexico international forward Aaron Padilla has died at the age of 77, his former club Pumas said.

Padilla, a speedy left-winger, was capped 55 times for Mexico and was a part of the Tricolor's squad in the 1966 and 1970 World Cups.

He played for Pumas in Mexico's first division during two spells in the 1960 and 70s and also represented Atlante and Veracruz.

"We regret the sad loss of an icon of the club and Mexican football," Pumas said on Twitter on Sunday.

The Liga MX, the organizer of Mexico's first division, also released a statement paying tribute to an "extraordinary human being."

"He was a wonderful friend and an essential part of the Mexican soccer family," the statement said.

Local media reported that Padilla died of complications related to COVID-19. He had also been suffering from Alzheimer's disease.
