Canada commits $145M to boost security for FIFA World Cup 2026 in Toronto, Vancouver

As the country prepares to host matches during one of the world’s largest sporting events, it aims at supporting enhanced public safety and security measures in host cities.

According to the statement, the investment responds to operational needs identified by provincial and municipal partners and is part of broader efforts to ensure a safe and secure tournament.

Planning involves coordination between all levels of government; law enforcement agencies; event organisers; and international partners, including the United States and Mexico, which are co-hosting the tournament.

The latest funding builds on earlier federal commitments of up to $220 million for host city preparations, along with an additional $100 million allocated in Budget 2025 to support federal agencies involved in delivering the event.

Authorities said the tournament is expected to generate significant economic benefits, including the creation of thousands of jobs, a $2 billion boost to the Canadian economy, and the arrival of more than one million visitors.

Security remains a central focus as Canada prepares to host matches, with officials emphasising the need for robust planning to manage the scale and complexity of the global event.

“The FIFA World Cup 2026 will be one of the largest and most complex sporting events ever hosted in Canada,” ​Public Safety Minister Anandasangaree said, adding that the funding reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring public safety and supporting local partners.

The federal government has also proposed broader investments in sport through its Spring Economic Update 2026, including $755 million over five years to strengthen the national sports system, support major events, and expand participation across communities.
