Veteran actress Surekha Sikri dies of cardiac arrest

Mumbai/IBNS: Veteran Indian actress Surekha Sikri, who had won hearts essaying the matriarch of a traditional rural Rajasthan family in the long-running teleserial Balika Vadhu, passed away on Friday. She was 75.

Sikri, who was suffering from illness for some time, died after suffering a cardiac arrest.

She had suffered a paralytic stroke earlier in 2018 and a brain stroke in 2020.

Sikri, who had acted in theatres, films as well as on television, began her career in 1970s with political satire Kissa Kursi Ka (which was banned during Emergency before its release in 1979).

She received the National Award thrice for Best Supporting Actress in Tamas (1988), Mammo (1995) and Badhaai Ho (2018).

On television, Sikri featured in popular daily soaps including Balika Vadhu (2008-2016), Saat Phere (2006-2009),  Ek Tha Raja Ek Thi Rani (2015-2017).

Besides critcal acclaim for her powerful performances in every screen appearances, she had won popular appreciation for her portrayal of "dadisa" in Balika Vadhu (Child Bride) that aired on Colors TV from 2008 to 2016 in 2248 episodes. 

She was married to Hemant Rege and the two had a son, Rahul Sikri.
