West Bengal: Cricketer Manoj Tiwari to join Trinamool Congress today

Kolkata/IBNS: Indian cricketer Manoj Tiwari is set to join West Bengal's ruling party Trinamool Congress on Wednesday.

Tiwari, who had represented the national team and Bengal at the regional level, will join the Trinamool in West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's rally in Hooghly.

On his joining, Tiwari said, "I was thinking about the future of my cricketing career. Presently I am out of cricket due to injury so it helped me to take the decision to plunge into politics. Beyond cricket, I want to serve people and work for them so I needed a platform.

"I am joining Trinamool Congress because of Mamata Banerjee who is the firebrand politician."

Tiwari's induction will follow a mass exodus of leaders from various rungs of the Trinamool over the last few months.

Former Indian cricketer-turned politician Laxmi Ratan Shukla has also resigned as the West Bengal Minister and Trinamool Congress MLA and member late last year.

However, Shukla said he was taking a break from politics.

Banerjee is set to address a rally at Dunlop Football Ground in Chinsurah, Hooghly at 1 pm.
