Veteran Communist leader Gurudas Dasgupta passes away

Kolkata/IBNS: Veteran Communist Party of India (CPI) leader, trade unionist and firebrand parliamentarian Gurudas Dasgupta passed away here on Thursday. 

He was 83.

He was admitted to a private hospital after falling ill in August this year. He had suffered a mild stroke then.

Also he was undergoing breathing and heart-related problems. Top political leaders of India mourned the death of a parliamentarian known for his contribution to trade union movement.

Despite being a true commnist and leader with strong opinions, he had a good rapport with the Opposition leader and was respected by political stalwarts like Atal Bihari Vajpayee and others. 

Congress leader Milind Deora mourning the death tweeted: "Fondly recall serving with CPI leader Gurudas Dasgupta in the 14th Lok Sabha. He was a political firebrand who made valuable parliamentary interventions, especially during 2004-09 when UPA-I was supported by Left parties. May his soul rest in peace."

Dasgupta became the Rajya Sabha MP in 1985. He was elected as the Lok Sabha MP from West Bengal's Paskura and Ghatal in 2004 and 2009 respectively. 

He was elected as the general secretary of All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) in 2001. Owing to his health issues, he had resigned from the post in 2017.

Mourning his death, the Communist Party of India (CPI-M) has put up a tweet which reads, "We mourn the demise of Comrade Gurudas Dasgupta, veteran leader of the Communist Party of India and renowned Parliamentarian. His contributions to the Left and working class Movement will inspire the young generation."

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee mourned Dasgupta's demise in a tweet saying, "Saddened at the passing away of CPI leader  Gurudas Dashgupta ji. He will be remembered for his contribution to the nation as a Parliamentarian and trade union leader. Condolences to his family, friends and colleagues."
