Azamgarh/UNI: A local Panchayat member was shot dead at Navada market in the Nizamabad area of this Uttar Pradesh district, police said on Tuesday.

The incident happened when the victim, Surendra Yadav, was returning from somewhere on Monday night.

Police here said that Surendra Yadav was returning from a 'terahvi' when he was stopped by several people over a local matter. They had an altercation during the conversation and meanwhile, these individuals shot him dead.

As soon as the news of his murder spread, the people nearby gathered on the spot. The enraged crowd set two bikes, parked in the market, on fire. Upon receiving information, police reached the spot.

DIG Subhash Chand Dubey and Azamgarh Superintendent of Police (SP) Sudhir Singh also reached the spot along with a police force.

The situation was somehow brought under control after pacifying the crowd.

Based on a written complaint of the family, a case has been registered against eight individuals. The SP said that one of the accused, Sanjay, has been arrested in connection with the case and six police teams have been formed for the arrest of the rest.
