Tributes paid to ex-Indian President APJ Abdul Kalam on his 88th birth anniversary

Rameswaram, Oct 15 (UNI) Floral tributes were paid to former President Dr Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam on his 88th birth anniversary at his home town here on Tuesday.

People from all walks of life, besides a large number of school and college students visited his memorial at Peikarumbu here and paid their homage by placing wreaths and lighting candles since this morning.

Ramanathapuram District Collector K Veera Raghava Rao were among senior Revenue Officials, besides scientists from the DRDO paid their homage at the memorial of Dr.Kalam.

The memorial was decked up with floral beautification.

Earlier, Dr.Kalam's family members, led by his elder brother A.P.J.Mohammed Muthu Meeran Maraikayar offered "dua" (special prayers) and distributed sweets to the students and public.

The birth anniversary of Dr Kalam, who was also fondly called as "Missile Man of India," was being observed as the "Youth Renaissance Day" every year in Tamil Nadu.

Tributes were paid to Dr.Kalam in most of the educational institutions across the State.

The students and teachers of the institutions paid homage to the portrait of Dr.Kalam, who was fondly remembered as the “People’s President.”

Born on October 15, 1931 in Rameswaram, Dr.Kalam served as the 11th President of India between 2002 and 2007. He played a crucial role in the 1998 Pokhran-II nuclear tests and closely associated with the country's space programmes.
