Telangana to act against Dia Mirza, Dhruv Rathee over 'AI clips' of tree felling in Kancha Gachibowli: Report

Hyderabad/IBNS: The Telangana government is likely to take action against actress Dia Mirza and popular YouTuber Dhruv Rathee for allegedly using AI-generated clips of tree felling in Hyderabad's Kancha Gachibowli, an India Today report said.

The government has traded charges amid the massive controversy over the deforestation in Kancha Gachibowli, which is located near the University of Hyderabad.

As per the report, Chief Minister of the Congress-ruled state, Revanth Reddy, directed officials on April 5 to take legal action taking serious note of the "misleading AI visuals".

The government claims the alleged misinformation is hurting the development of IT infrastructure in 400 acres of the land.

Dia Mirza rejected the claims and asked the media and government to verify the images.

She posted on X, "The CM of Telangana posted a tweet yesterday. He made certain claims about the situation at Kancha Gachibowli. One of them was that I had used FAKE AI generated images/videos in support of the protest by students to protect biodiversity on the 400acres of land the government wanted to auction.

"This is an absolutely false statement. I have not posted a single image or video that is AI generated. The media and the Telangana government should verify their facts before making such claims."

The government's decision of deforestation sparked protests from the students of the University of Hyderabad and environmental activists, who have drawn attention to the loss of wildlife habitat in the region which is reportedly home to different species of plants, birds, deer, pythons.

The students claim the land belongs to the university while the government claims it is state-owned.

The Supreme Court last week ordered a pause in all activities in the region expressing concerns for environmental impacts and questioned the urgency of the tree felling.

The court has demanded an explanation from the Telangana government and asked whether environmental clearances were secured.

As per reports, the government has been cutting down trees to flatten the land ahead of the auction.

The top court will hear the case next on April 16.
