Taliban release 20 Afghan soldiers in Northern Kunduz province
Kabul/UNI: The Taliban in a statement on Thursday said that it had released 20 more Afghan soldiers in the northern Kunduz province, as part of the prisoner exchange deal with the Afghan government.
The Taliban added that keeping in mind the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic they would try to speed up the prisoner release process, Tolo News reported.
Earlier in April, the Taliban had released some 40 Afghan police officers and soldiers on two separate occasions. The Afghan government on the other hand has released 661 members of the Taliban so far.
The Taliban wants 5,000 of its members freed by the Afghan government as a pre-condition for intra-Afghan talks to go ahead, which was promised by the February US-Taliban deal.
The Afghan government has so far agreed to gradually release 1,500 prisoners.
