Show me a country which says 'everybody is welcome', says Jaishankar on CAA slamming UNHRC
New Delhi/IBNS: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday slammed the United Nations Human Rights Council(UNHRC) for giving a narrative based on incorrect information on Kashmir just like it had done on previous occasions and said one should look at the UN rights body's handling of Kashmir issue in the past, said media reports.
Replying to a question on CAA on ET Global Business Summit, Jaishankar said, "We have tried to reduce the number of stateless people through this legislation.That should be appreciated."
The minister said that every country has a criterion and context for providing citizenship.
"Show me a country in the world which says everybody in the world is welcome. Nobody says that," he asserted.
Earlier this week, the United Nations High Commissioner for human rights filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking its intervention and informed India's permanent mission in Geneva.
Attacking the UNHRC, Jaishankar said, "I have seen reports on Jammu and Kashmir by the same body; how carefully they skirt the issue of cross border terrorism as if it has nothing to with the country next door.
"Please understand where they are coming from. Look at UNHRC's record of how they have handled the Kashmir issue in the past."
Reiterating the Centre's stand on CAA, the minister said the government has tried to reduce the number of stateless people in the country with the newly amended law and "that should be appreciated.
