Saradha case: Former Kolkata top cop Rajeev Kumar gets anticipatory bail

Kolkata: In a setback for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday granted an anticipatory bail to former Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar, who is an accused in the Saradha chit fund case, in a bond of Rs. 50,000.

The high court said the CBI can challenge the order in higher court.

The CBI has unsuccessfully searched Kumar for days as the former top cop is untraceable.

Earlier the high court had rejected the anticipatory bail of Kumar.

The former top cop is accused of destroying evidences related to the chit fund scam.

Earlier on Feb 3, when the CBI had approached Kumar's residence for questioning, the officers of the federal probe agency were whisked away by the Kolkata Police. Later West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had resorted to a sit-in protest or dharna in downtown of the city against the CBI's move.

West Bengal Congress president Somen Mitra feels the anticipatory bail to Rajeev Kumar is a result of the bonhomie between the BJP and Trinamool. He told IBNS, "It is a pre-arranged thing. Rajeev Kumar's anticipatory bail was decided when Mamata Banerjee had met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah. It is a reward. It is a pre-arranged game of the BJP and Mamata."

"Maybe it will take time but ultimately the truth will come out," the veteran politician added.

BJP leader Rahul Sinha said, "It is unfortunate. Despite rejecting the anticipatory bail earlier, the high court's latest order is not understable. I feel the CBI will go to the Supreme Court challenging this order."
