Balrampur (Uttar Pradesh), Jan 5/UNI:  Unidentified assailants killed Samajwadi Party leader Firoz Pappu  with sharp-edged weapons here, triggering protests by his supporters, police said on Wednesday.

Police sources said Pappu (41), husband of Tulsipur Nagar Panchayat Chairperson Kahkashan, was returning home from Jarwa on Tuesday when he was attacked, leaving him badly injured in the neck and forehead.

Pappu, a former Chairman of the same Nagar Panchayat, was rushed to a hospital in a serious condition where doctors declared him dead.

As news of the murder spread, his supporters gathered on the streets and started protesting demanding the arrest of the killers.

Superintendent of Police Hemant Kutiyal reached the spot and persuaded the protesters to disperse and sent the body to the mortuary.

As tension grew, additional police forces were deployed in the entire region. Police said several teams have been formed to arrest the accused.
