New Delhi/UNI: Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Monday condemned the violence between pro and anti - Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) agitators in North-East Delhi's jaffrabad and Maujpur areas and urged citizens of Delhi to show "restraint, compassion and understanding no matter what the provocation".

"The violence today in Delhi is disturbing and must be unequivocally condemned. Peaceful protests are a sign of a healthy democracy, but violence can never be justified. I urge the citizens of Delhi to show restraint, compassion and understanding no matter what the provocation," Mr Gandhi tweeted.

Earlier in the day, the Congress party said that the Delhi police, under the Union Home Ministry, has completely failed to control law and order.

"Delhi Police, under Home Ministry, has completely failed to control law and order. BJP leaders have been openly giving hate speeches and threats but no action is being taken," the party tweeted along with a news report of former Delhi MLA and BJP leader Kapil Mishra giving 'ultimatum' to Delhi police to stop the anti-CAA protests in North-East Delhi's Jaffrabad and Maujpur areas.

According to reports, on Sunday, the clash and stone pelting had started soon after Mr Mishra along with pro-CAA supporters gathered in Maujpur-Babarpur Metro Station, 2 km away from the Jaffrabad anti-CAA protest site, in the evening.

Later, the BJP leader tweeted along with a video, in which he can been seen telling that they are giving three days ultimatum to Delhi Police to clear Jaffrabad and Chandbagh roads, else, they won't listen and will take to the streets.

"Such comments can only be made with complicity of senior party leaders and the police", the Congress further said.

On Monday, a Delhi Police constable was killed and several others, including a DCP, were injured in the clashes.

In a tweet, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said, "Very distressing news regarding disturbance of peace and harmony in parts of Delhi coming in. I sincerely urge LG and Union Home Minister to restore law and order n ensure that peace and harmony is maintained. Nobody should be allowed to orchestrate flagrations
