'No vote, no amenities like water, light': TMC candidate Tapan Dasgupta threatens during poll-campaign, later claims he was 'just joking'

Kolkata/IBNS: Former West Bengal minister and Trinamool Congress (AITC) candidate from Saptagram assembly constituency, Tapan Dasgupta, allegedly threatened voters to stop providing basic amenities, including electricity and water, during poll-campaign in his constituency on Saturday.

According to reports, a day after TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee announced the candidates' list for the forthcoming Bengal polls, Tapan Dasgupta along with his supporters had started election campaigns and he was captured saying those words to the electorates.

"I will check the results booth-wise, and where we get no votes, there will be neither lights nor water," Tapan Dasgupta was seen saying these words to voters in a footage which has gone viral on social media.

"If you vote BJP, then ask them for these amenities," Dasgupta said.

Tweeting the video, BJP's IT head Amit Malviya wrote: "Afraid of losing, Tapan Dasgupta, incumbent MLA and Pishi’s candidate from Hooghly’s Saptagram resorts to medieval barbarism and is seen threatening voters to cut off water supply should they vote for the BJP! Not unexpected of the TMC though..."

Later amid criticisms, Tapan Dasgupta posted a video on his social media wall where he claimed that he was just joking.

"I was just joking and nowhere I said that I would cut water-supply lines or electricity wires," Dasgupta said.
