'No apology, no fine': Comedian Kunal Kamra on contempt of court charge

New Delhi/IBNS: Remaining defiant over his criticism of the topmost level of Indian judiciary, comedian Kunal Kamra on Friday said he would neither apologise nor pay a "fine" for the contempt of court charge brought against him.

In a long statement shared on social media, Kamra wrote, "All that I tweeted was from my view of the Supreme Court of India giving a partial decision in favour of a Prime Time Loudspeaker..."

"My view hasn't changed because the silence of the Supreme Court of India on matters of other's personal liberty cannot go uncriticized. I don't intend to retract my tweets or apologise for them,.." read an extract from the statement.

Attorney General of India KK Venugopal on Thursday gave consent to a lawyer to initiate criminal proceedings against Kamra for his tweets suggesting the Supreme Court's biases in granting interim bail to senior journalist Arnab Goswami.

After Republic TV journalist Goswami was granted bail in the 2018 abetment to suicide case on Wednesday, Kamra, a critic of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), lashed out at the Supreme Court accusing it of working in association with the incumbent.

Kamra had tweeted, "The Supreme Court of this country is the most Supreme joke of this country..."

"The pace at which the Supreme Court operates in matters of “National Interests” it’s time we replace Mahatma Gandhi’s photo with Harish Salve’s photo...," he said in another tweet.

In a separate tweet by Kamra, the BJP's flag was seen unfurled in the Supreme Court.

Goswami, who was heckled by Kamra on a flight months ago, was arrested for allegedly abetting the suicide of a 53-year old interior designer Anvay Naik and his mother couple of years ago in Maharashtra, a state ruled by an opposition party.
