Monsoon Session: Rajya Sabha adjourned for the day amid ruckus

New Delhi/UNI: The proceedings of the Rajya Sabha were adjourned for the day on Monday amid Opposition ruckus over a host of issues.

Members of Opposition parties created a pandemonium over the special status to Andhra Pradesh, alleged spying on journalists, citizenship of a new minister among other issues, leading to a brief discussion on only one bill.

Upon reassembling after the third adjournment, when Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh wanted to conduct the proceedings of the House, Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge said that the members have given notices under Rule 267 which should be discussed first.

Congress deputy leader Anand Sharma and other opposition parties also supported him.

At this, Mr Singh said that the issue has been settled by the Chairman in the morning and there can be no discussion on it.

After this, Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal introduced The Marine Aids to Navigation Bill, 2021. He could barely be heard as the Opposition Members rushed to the Well and raised slogans.

Subhash Chandra Singh of Biju Janata Dal, Banda Prakash of Telangana Rashtra Samithi and TMC-M, KGK Vasan supported the bill.

However, the members of the opposition refrained from participating in the discussion.

Amid continued uproar, the Deputy Chairman repeatedly urged the members to calm down and allow the House to continue with the proceedings but to no avail.

Taking cognisance of the situation, he announced the adjournment of the House till 1100 hrs on Tuesday.
