Maharashtra: 2 die in Raigad building collapse, 16 feared trapped

Mumbai/IBNS: Two people have died and 16 others are feared trapped in the building collapse which took place in the Raigad district of Maharashtra on Monday evening, media reports said.

At least 60 people have been rescued so far.

The rescue operations are still underway.

Three teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and 12 teams of the fire brigade are at the spot.

The collapsed 10-year old five-storey building which had 45 flats.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday expressed grief over the incident.

"Saddened by the building collapse in Mahad, Raigad in Maharashtra. My thoughts are with the families of those who lost their dear ones. I pray the injured recover soon. Local authorities and NDRF teams are at the site of the tragedy, providing all possible assistance," Modi said as per a tweet put up by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO).

Union Home Minister Amit Shah tweeted, "The collapse of a building in Raigad, Maharashtra is very tragic. Have spoken to DG @NDRFHQ to provide all possible assistance, teams are on the way and will be assisting with the rescue operations as soon as possible. Praying for everyone’s safety."
