Lakhimpur Kheri Violence: Judicial probe and compensation announced for bereaved families
Lakhimpur Kheri/UNI/IBNS: A day after violence hit Lakhimpur Kheri district which left nine people, including four farmers, dead, an agreement has been reached between the agitating farmers and Uttar Pradesh government on Monday.
The government has accepted a judicial probe by a retired judge of the High Court.
Rs 45 lakh compensation to the families of the deceased, a government job as per their qualification and Rs 10 lakhs for injured and time bound action against the guilty people has also been announced.
In a joint press conference here by farmer leader Rakesh Tikait and ADG (Law and Order) Prashant Kumar, the details of the agreement were announced to the media.
Kumar said very soon the name of the Judge would be announced for the judicial probe.
The ADG said that an agreement has been reached with the farmers that the guilty people would be arrested within eight days.
He said two FIRs have been registered and now police will investigate to nab the guilty people.
In one of the FIR, union minister of state for home Ajay Mishra Teni's son Ashish has been made the prime accused by the farmers.
ADG also said that STF has also been roped in to assist the police to nab the criminals responsible for the violence.
Rakesh Tikait too said that farmers are satisfied with the government's move and the compensation given to the families of the deceased.
He assured that farmers would fully cooperate with the police in the investigation.
The agreement was reached after two rounds of talks between the government authorities and farmer leaders led by Rakesh Tikait.
Meanwhile, violence broke out on Monday outside the residence of Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav here after he was detained by police when he staged a sit-in for being stopped from visiting Lakhimpur.
During the violence, SP workers torched a police vehicle. Police had resorted to lathicharge on SP workers who were agitating as their leader was prevented from going to Lakhimpur, where nine people were killed on Sunday.
Later, Akhilesh Yadav, along with his supporters, was taken to Eco Park by police.
According to police sources, a Special Task Force (STF) will investigate the Lakhimpur Kheri incident and around two dozen people are being investigated on the basis of a video that went viral.
So far, six people have been arrested and more are likely to be nabbed soon.
SP leader Shivpal Singh Yadav, who attempted to escape from the police by climbing across the boundary wall of his residence, was detained near Engineering college crossing in Lucknow when he was attempting to go to Lakhimpur.
According to reports, RLD president Jayant Choudhury was also detained here at Zero point crossing on NH 24.
Meanwhile, the UP government has written to Punjab Chief Secretary urging not to allow anyone from the state to Lakhimpur Kheri, where Section 144 of CrPC has been imposed.
Trains connecting Bahraich and Mailani were cancelled on Monday due to the Lakhimpur violence.
Police have increased vigil on the Bahraich-Lakhimpur border.
