Srinagar/UNI: An unidentified militant was killed by security forces in an encounter which ensued during a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in north Kashmir district of Baramulla on Thursday, a police spokesman said.

He said on a tip-off about the presence of militants, troops of Rashtriya Rifles (RR), Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir and CRPF launched a joint CASO in the early hours of Thursday at village Wanigam Payeen Kreeri in Baramulla.

After sealing all exit points, when security forces launched house-to-house searches, they came under fire from militants hiding there since Thursday morning, he said, adding fire was retaliated ensuing in an encounter.

He said an unidentified militant was killed so far and operation was going on when the reports last came in.

Meanwhile, additional security forces and police personnel have been rushed to the area to prevent any law and order problem outside the cordoned off area.

Locals told UNI over the phone that loud explosions and firing continued during the day since Thursday morning.

He said the house was locked from where militants were firing. However, residents in nearby houses were rescued and taken to safer places.
