Srinagar/UNI: Three security forces personnel, including a CRPF jawan, were injured in an encounter which ensued after a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) was launched in downtown in the summer capital, Srinagar, where cellular and mobile internet services were suspended for security reason.

A police official said that following special information about presence of militants, a joint CASO was launched by Special Operations Group (SOG) of J&K police, Army and CRPF at around 0200 hrs on Tuesday at densely populated Kanemazar area in Nawakadal, Srinagar.

He said when security forces were moving towards the target house, militants hiding there, fired at them with automatic weapons. “Security forces retaliated ensuing in an encounter,” he said, adding the exchange of fire took place during the night.

He said additional security forces were rushed to further cordon off the area to foil any attempts by militants to escape.

“Firing resumed during search in the morning and the operation continues,” he said.

Sources said that three security force personnel were injured in the exchange of fire.

They said that cellular service, barring BSNL, and mobile internet were suspended in Srinagar for security reasons.
