Its been 80 days, trial has not been completed: Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on delay in Unnao rape case

New Delhi/UNI: Taking on the Yogi Adityanath government over the delay in the Unnao rape case trial, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi on Wednesday said 'when an influential BJP MLA is involved, filing of cases and arrests gets delayed'.

"The Supreme Court had given instructions that the trial in the Unnao rape case should be completed in 45 days. However, its been 80 days, trial has not been completed", the Congress general secretary tweeted in Hindi, while sharing a news report on it.

She further said crimes against women is highest in Uttar Pradesh and cases are not registered against the culprits.

"If the case involves a influential BJP MLA, then firstly FIR is delayed, then there is delay in arrest and now the trial is hanging," she added.

In August, a Supreme Court bench, headed by the then Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, had transferred all five cases related to Unnao rape compliant, in which a 17-year old girl in 2017 accused former BJP MLA Kuldeen Singh Sengar of rape.

The Supreme Court had also directed the trial court to hear the case on a daily basis and complete proceedings within 45 days.

The CBI, however, has continuously been asking the trial court for extensions.
