Incident like rape should not be politicised: Modi
London, Apr 19 (IBNS):Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday broke his silence over the recent rape incidents in India and said these issues should not be politicised.
Modi made the remarks at a time when the opposition leaders were attacking him for remaining silent over the numerous rape incidents that triggered protests across the nation in the last few days.
Silencing his critics, Modi said during Bharat Ki Baat Sabke Saath programme in London: "A rape is a rape.. How can we accept this?"
He said the rape of a daughter was a matter of 'shame' for the country.
"The rape of a (daughter) is a matter of worry. It is a shame for the country," Modi said.
The Kathua and Unnao rape incidents left the nation shocked and several protests were held across the country, demanding justice for the victims.
Modi said he welcomes criticisms of his government.
"I want this Government to be criticised. Criticism makes democracy strong," he said.
Modi said: "My problem is not against criticism. To criticise, one has to research and find proper facts. Sadly, it does not happen now. What happens instead is allegations."
Narendra Modi is currently in London.
He met PM Theresa May on Wednesday.
