IIT Mandi: Ten students suspended for six months for involvement in ragging incident

Ten students of IIT-Mandi in Himachal Pradesh were suspended for six months and disciplinary action have also been taken against 72 others in a mass ragging incident of first year students.

This incident took place on August 11.

An official spokesman said that IIT Mandi Director Prof Lakshmidutt Behera had sent a letter to all the students who were involved in the ragging on August 20 in which there was a mention of crossing the 'Lakshman Rekha' by these students.

According to the Institute, students from 72 different faculties have been found guilty.

Some students found guilty have also been fined.

Ten students have been suspended. Out of the 10 suspended students, three are also officials of the student organization.

He said that the IIT Mandi has taken this action on the basis of investigation of unknown complaints during the Fresher Mixer organized by senior students on August 11.

In the complaints received by the institute, first year students have alleged that senior students have been ragging and making them stand in the corner during the meet. While the senior student have defended himself by saying that it was a joke that usually happens during the fresher's mixer every year.

No complaint have been lodged with the police by the Institute regarding ragging that took place last month.

The Director of the institute was not available for comments.
