Lucknow/IBNS: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Saturday accused the Uttar Pradesh police of manhandling her while she was on her way to meet the family members of former IPS officer SR Darapuri and party colleague Sadaf Jafar who were arrested while they were protesting against the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019.

After she was stopped by police, Priyanka took a two-wheeler to meet the family members of Darapuri and Jafar.

"I was stopped, the women police stopped me, surrounded and strangulated me. I was pushed and I fell down. Then I went ahead with a party member on a two-wheeler which was also stopped. Then I walked the rest of the road," said the Congress leader.

Jafar was arrested from Lucknow's Parivartan Chowk on Dec 19.

Congress leaders are alleging that Jafar is being given "third-degree".

At the time of her arrest the actor-activist was live on Facebook, showing the destruction in the area as violent mobs has set media vans, a government bus and several private vehicles on fire.

Jafar's bail plea has been rejected by a Lucknow court citing the charges against her as "serious" in nature.

Uttar Pradesh police have confirmed at least 1,113 people have been arrested in connection with the CAA agitation, and identified 498 pepple, with 148 only from Meerut, who will be asked to compensate for destruction of public property.

At least 20 people were killed in the violence protests which took place in the northern state over the last two weeks.
