Hope it furthers spirit of peace and happiness: Narendra Modi wishes on Eid-Al-Adha

New Delhi, Aug 12 (IBNS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday wished the nation on the ocassion of Eid-Al-Adha and hoped the day of festivity furthered the spirit of peace and happiness in society.

" My best wishes on the occasion of Eid al-Adha. I hope it furthers the spirit of peace and happiness in our society. Eid Mubarak!," he tweeted.

The Muslim community in India is celebrating Eid on Monday.

People gathered at mosques across the country to offer their prayers.

Eid al-Adha is also called the "Festival of the Sacrifice".

It is the second of two Islamic holidays celebrated worldwide each year (the other being Eid al-Fitr).

It is considered the holier of the two.

It honours the willingness of Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God's command.

But, before Abraham could sacrifice his son, God provided a lamb to sacrifice instead.

In commemoration of this intervention, an animal is sacrificed ritually and divided into three parts. One share is given to the poor and needy, another is kept for home, and the third is given to relatives.
