Heavy rain lashes Kolkata, several areas waterlogged

Kolkata: Heavy overnight rains in Kolkata and adjoining areas left several places in the city waterlogged on Wednesday.

Waterlogging trouble hit Kolkata in recent weeks as the city experienced several spells of heavy rains.

"Intermittent spells of moderate to heavy rain and thundershower with strong winds (40-60 kmph) will continue at many places associated with moderate lightning at at some places over Kolkata and Haldia during the next 18-24 hours," read Skymet Weather website.

The India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) regional office in south Kolkata registered around 72 mm rain till around 8:30 am since Tuesday morning, Hindustan Times reported.

The IMD had issued  a red alert for heavy rains in some districts of south Bengal.

“While red alert, the highest form of alert in the four graded rain alert system, was sounded for three districts of East Midnapore, West Midnapore and South 24 Parganas on Tuesday, for Wednesday it has been sounded for West Midnapore and Jhargram where there could be rainfall up to 200mm,” an IMD official in Kolkata told the newspaper.

Meanwhile,  Bhabanipur seat in Kolkata will see by-poll voting on Thursday.

The seat is crucial as West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is contesting from the constituency to retain her chief ministership.

Mamata Banerjee was defeated from Nandigram seat in the West Bengal Assembly polls earlier this year.

BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari had defeated her.

Officials told Hindustan Times that special care is being taken for Bhabanipur in south Kolkata to avoid any water logging.
