Vijayapur/UNI: Former Karnataka Water Resources minister and senior Congress leader MB Patil has appealed the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to rescue the Jawar growers in Karnataka and to announce better support price for the staple food grain.

In a letter to PM Modi, and a copy of which was released to the media here on Thursday, Mr Patil has brought to the notice of the woes of the Jawar growers, facing in the Northern Karnataka region.

Stating that the Jawar, the staple food grain in the state, is waning in the Northern Karnataka region, due to steep fall in the price of the food grain and rising cost of inputs and labour, he said that “unless the Union government take remedial measure the crop of Jawar will seize to produce in the region”.

Informing that the farmers are sustaining a huge loss if they go for Jawar crop, he said that the farmers had stopped growing jawar in the region.

“The Jawar food grain contains a rich minerals, vitamins and fiber and if it goes off from the grain basket, will result into a health disaster and government should come forward to patronize the farmers growing jawar” the Congress leader said.
