Covid cases in India cross 78,000, toll over 2,500 as India set to end lockdown 3.0

New Delhi/IBNS: The total number of Covid-19 cases in India crossed 78,000 with over 2,500 of them dying from the respiratory disease on Thursday as the vast country of 1.3 billion people is set to end the third phase of anti-Coronavirus lockdown.

As per the latest update by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, 78,003 people including 2,549 deceased and 26,235 cured have been infected.

Maharashtra, the worst-hit state, has recorded 25,922 cases followed by Gujarat (9,267), Tamil Nadu (9,227) and the national capital Delhi (7,998).

The Maharashtra government on Wednesday sought 20 companies of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) to give relief to their police force.

India will exit the lockdown 3.0 on May 18 though Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his national address on Tuesday said the country will enter into the lockdown 4.0 but with "different colours".

Not spilling the beans about how the lockdown 4.0 would shape, Modi has hinted the country will have to live with the contagion which has no vaccine or cure yet for longer times.

"All scientists are saying Coronavirus will remain in our lives for a longer time. But we will have to transcend. We will wear masks and maintain social distancing but also we will have to achieve our targets," said Modi.

"All details about lockdown 4.0 will be given before May 18," said the PM who held a marathon around six-hour long meeting with all Chief Ministers on Monday.

India went into the lockdown mode first on Mar 24 midnight when Modi had announced a 21-day shutdown which was later extended twice till May 17.
